Sixth Form 16-18
Sixth Form at St John’s is designed to provide our students with a challenging but exciting transition to university life.
When they have finished Sixth Form, our leavers will be independent-minded young people with an international outlook and a passion for inquiry and learning. Whilst academic rigour is of the utmost importance we also ensure that our Sixth Formers are supported to have a practical awareness of life beyond school – to understand the opportunities that exist for them and the challenges that they may face. Our enrichment programme helps to ensure that we are educating our students for life beyond the confines of the classroom.
The key to Sixth Form study at St John’s is flexibility. Because our Sixth Form is small, we have the opportunity of working closely with every single student to provide the opportunities that are right for them and to create a highly personalised learning experience.
Most importantly classes will be small, with tutors who really know how each student works to the very best of their ability.
Although we have a small Sixth Form, we are still able to offer a wide range of AS/A Levels with staff who are fully trained to deliver those courses.
In addition, we have the flexibility to be able to combine courses with Pre-U/IGCSEs and, because of our relationship with Bicton College, we can also offer courses of a more vocational nature on a day release scheme.
In Year 12, a compulsory part of the curriculum is a Global Perspectives AS Level. This is an internationally recognised qualification with a global outlook – exactly the kind of additional qualification that universities around the world look for.
We are also the only school in the UK to offer AS Level Marine Science. This is a popular choice for our students and with our beautiful coastal location we are in the ideal position to offer such an interesting course.
There are genuine opportunities for Sixth Formers to add responsibilities and leaderships skills to their Personal Statements and all Sixth Formers are expected to participate and/or lead some of these activities.

One of the key benefits of Sixth Form study at St John’s is our international outlook. In our fast paced, global community, developing internationally minded young people is a priority.
Not only will our Sixth Formers be studying alongside young people from all corners of the globe, the curriculum itself and our enrichment activities reflect the international nature of our school. As part of Global Perspectives there is the opportunity to visit and study in our sister schools in Boca Raton, Florida and/or Budapest, Hungary.
Sixth Formers will also have the opportunity of taking part in InterSEK, a cultural and sporting exchange that takes place between IES and SEK schools every year. In previous years this has taken place in Ecuador, Paraquay and Dominican Republic.
