Early Birds

The Early Birds department of St John’s Nursery caters for 2-3 year old children.

Children enjoy a wide variety of stimulating and fun activities centred around the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Activities are age appropriate with a strong emphasis on free play, whether it’s in our main activity room, our sand and craft areas or outside in our purpose built outdoor area. We are happy for children to be wearing nappies and will support them through the potty training experience. Early Bird sessions are offered from one day (5 hours minimum) to a full 5 day week to accommodate the needs of busy parents. The Unit is open from 8am to 5pm daily term time.

Within the Nursery Department we strive to provide an environment where our children are able to explore, question, investigate, create and imagine. Our children are encouraged to learn through play and exploration, using our main activity room, our sand and craft areas, our outside area and the wider school grounds wherever possible.

The children are also given opportunities to begin making their own choices and to interact with their peers in a variety of situations.

The cornerstone of our work is “Every Child Matters” and our curriculum follows the programme set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which strongly promotes a “play based” curriculum.

This allows the children to develop as individuals, learn through enquiry and foster positive relationships with their young peers. We have a successful team with a range of experience and good knowledge of our curriculum and child development, who support our children in their development through early childhood.

We also follow the Primary Years Programme (PYP) alongside the EYFS. The PYP Learner Profile encourages the development of the child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. St John’s is one of only 14 schools in the UK authorised to teach the PYP and this programme is followed throughout the Junior School.

The Nursery Department is fortunate to have its own playground in our own special area of the school and we also benefit from the full range of other facilities in the main school itself, for example, use of the sports hall, a foreign language lesson with the Junior School Language Teacher and involvement in whole school events such as Red Nose Day and the European Day of Languages.

Nursery sessions are offered between 8am -5pm. Your child can attend a minimum of 2 . hrs up to a full 5 day week as appropriate to your needs. The school accepts the government vouchers, which entitles children to 15 hours per week pre-school sessions effective from the term after the child’s third birthday.

Comprehensive Care
As well as a package of comprehensive care throughout the day, Early Birds and Nursery children receive a mid-morning snack, a healthy lunch (taken in the main school dining room) and a light tea in the afternoon. There is a small charge for lunch in the Nursery or you can bring a packed lunch for your child.

St John´s Nursery is OFSTED registered and is also subject to Independent School Inspections on a regular basis.

After School Provision:
After School care is available to all children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. A snack tea is provided and a wide range of activities are arranged to extend the children’s learning into the early evening.

We are open Term Time but also offer some Holiday Care.

Parents are always invited to come and see our facilities and discuss their needs and children can come for a “taster day” before joining the Nursery at any point during the year.
